We are waiting for the cold weather to turn Shallow Bay into a frozen playground…  Also Lara is working on a show for the Chocolate Claim in December and preparing for a number of Christmas sales in the Whitehorse area.  -dh

July 7, 2008

Sitting on the couch with laptop in lap, at the end of a long summer day, with a belly full of cherries, as i finally write something in studio news….it should be called studio olds….

I am tired after a morning of naming earrings and necklaces, followed by weeding the garden, making sticky beads, cycling 50 km, stringing bracelets, playing 18 holes of disc golf, and drinking two glasses of wine.

Only 5 days away from my birthday, and i am pumped about spending it here at shallow bay, chilling with Darren and whoever else is around.  There is a music/art festival in atlin, where most of whitehorse will be heading…but i decided i did not want to work on my birthday.

June and July are usually hectic months, with lots of studio visits and busy markets, so i am looking forward to relaxing at home this weekend.  My mother spent the month of june with us, and it was great visiting her favorite haunts and showing her some new ones.  We were busily getting ready for the opening of “bloom” on july 2nd, but made time for local sightseeing.  Our frames were shipped a bit late, and arrived the day before solstice, and the bike relay, so Darren was putting in overtime after we got home from Haines.  It feels great to have the show up and running, and now i can focus on getting back in my studio to roll some beads!!!

It’s a beautiful, clear evening and i wish i could stay up later, but my eyes, legs and mind are tired and i need to go to bed….

January 10th 2008

back in my studio again after a long, relaxing christmas with only visions of beads dancing in my head instead of rolling in my hands.   sure feels good!  this week i have been playing around with some of my old semi-retired, and just plain tired, canes.  doing a bit of revamping and reinventing.  i have also started on some valentine's hearts so i can be sure to get them drilled and strung and out in the february day in time for the big day!

the light is getting better and the days longer so i can usually start rolling by 10 am, without having to start the genny.  i love winter mornings with the gentle start to the day huddled around the roaring woodstove with a hot latte in hand.  even sweeter when the glass has been cleaned and you can watch the flames licking around the logs.  i am getting low on wood for the studio, so that is on the agenda for this week.   we can't have a cold beadress, can we?

it has been consistently cold, between -15 and -30 for the last few weeks, so both stoves are going steady.  i am getting into the weather though, and have managed quite a few ski hours around the bay, generally midday when its sunny and warm-ish.  i love how every day the light is so different, ever-changing.  its great to get out and burn off some chocolate.  we bundled up for a few very brisk walks over the holiday, when the temperature was too nasty for skiing.

all for now,  i am feeling a late night ice-cream chill and craving a game of sudoku with artist management.  gotta go

What to do in the middle of winter ... count beads on Lara's table... and use DH's inventory spreadsheets to estimate "how many beads have I drilled?" ... looks like around 50,000 in the last seven years.

November 28, 2007

Night at the cabin and i am taking a break from the studio with a glass of wine and some groovy tunes while dh whiles away his time "whipping" some rope.  He's doing an amazing job!!  We were both working late tonight after an early supper and an awesome ski on the lake.  Conditions are pretty good for skate-skiing, so when the light got too dim for framing or beading, we headed out for some fresh air.  It was fresh all right!  Not super cold, with very little wind,  and it sure made the pasta supper taste amazing!  It's supposed to be -28 by Sunday night, so we are taking advantage of good skiing while we can.  We have a sale on Sunday as well.   i hope it doesn't get too cold.  This will be the first "snap" of the season so far.

Friday night we'll be firing up the brick oven for pizza.  I can't wait.  I have been craving it for a while now.  Happy we are making the time for that!  Cheesy numminess!  Plus we are fully loaded with 2 lovely growlers from the local brewery!  They are chilling in the hole!  Gotta love that organically chilled beer.  Chocolate brown and grizzley!  !!!!  Oh yah!

Time to head to bed…..

November 2, and the night before my first Christmas sale of the year.  Its late-ish and i should be making my way to bed, but i'm pretty excited about the debut of some new work.  a series of new landscapes, something borbley and bright, and the cutest little guys….ever.  i don't want to give anything away in case anyone checks the site tonight!    (as if)

We have been working steadily since the end of holiday time.  I was so happy to get back in my studio, it's been hard to ever get me out.  Except for skating!    We have gone out every day this week since Sunday.  And every day the ice is different.  at first it was covered in snow, and that really gives you a false sense of security, but then you can easily see the open spots.  We do stay right on the edge of the bay which is very shallow, but it stills sucks to get a soaker.  All the warm weather on Tuesday melted the snow off the surface and that was a wet pant day!  Now it's buffed smooth from yukon wind, and we skated all the way out to the big lake.  We each busted through a tiny bit, and dh got a wet sock!  There were some amazingly clear spots with very cool weeds, and i saw a few fish scurry by.  What we need now is a couple of good cold nights!

The clouds on the way to town this evening were incredible.  Like peach sorbet!  I didn't have my camera, so i'll have to try to keep them in mind for later in the week.  more later.  And possibly some photos…

october 6th and we just got back from a 2 month road trip - so it's time to get back to work...

june 25th, and we are fully into solstice time.  so much light, i don't know what to do with it all.  i was working in the studio until 10:30 pm last night and there was still lots of light left...i just ran out of steam after a full weekend of hiking, gaming and hanging out with friends.  my shoulders are a bit stiff from numerous rounds of disc golf and we even played the back 9 out here at the bay.  it was my best score ever! maybe the new "chocolate brown ale"  from yukon brewing helped...who knows.

a fresh batch of whirlies are just coming out of the oven this morning, with some new stickies as well.  won't be doing too much rolling of clay today though, as i walloped my hand pretty good in my pre-caffeined state as i was turning on the pilot light for the oven.  one of my veins turned blue and swollen right quick!  it'll be fine for stringing today and that's exactly what i am in the mood for.  i tidied up the bead table a bit, and will work on necklaces for the fireweed community market and the upcoming Atlin Arts and Music Festival.

we just bought a VW van and its being tuned up a bit in time hopefully in time for atlin.  i am pumped.  dh says he could maybe fix me up a little beading station inside....what a blast!

May and June have been very beautiful spring months with lots of sunshine, very little rain, and numerous visits from friends and family.  my mom nellie, and niece Bryana were here for a month and i did not spend much time in the studio apart from working on a show with my friend Georgi.....we collaborated on an exhibit of one-off skirts that she designed and i added to.  we called it "jupe"  and it's up at the Chocolate Claim until June 28th.   the favorite orange one with polka-dot "underwear"  is still available, with makes me very happy!!!   friends from vancouver...donald, jane, cara, and katie-rose came to "the country" for a week and just a couple days ago my nephew dropped in for the night, on a huge road trip from ontario to alaska

it was a great fun to see everyone, and take a bit of a break from working.  i am now regenerated and ready to get at it again, but we'll still be making time for paddling, biking, and enjoying our fine weather....with many more rounds of disc golf before the snow flies!

January 10 and a whole new year now....its cold again.  seems like i only make the time to write when its really cold out.  it was minus 43 this morning and felt very nasty after such a long stretch with nice warm days.  amazing how you get used to that.  i am slowly getting back into work at the studio.  its nice and tidy anyway!  we went for a great walk out on the bay today, and those mountains and snowy hills are so inspiring.  tomorrow i will make some mountains!

the holidays were fun and very social, with lots of games of settlers of catan, and we even played mahjong.  it has been a while! i am presently trying to wean myself from the 3 square meals of chocolate every day... i am probably down to one good feeding daily.  apparently, its very important to get all your anti-oxidants.

skiing has been great, and i was getting out every day on our lovely groomed trails right in front of the cabin.  darren has been fashioning various grooming systems for wide skate-skiing trails.  the great thing with skating is NO WAX, and big exercise.  "OK, i have lungs!"   its crazy hard though when its colder than -15.  sunday past, darren and i were out for a gruelling hour.  he hurt his back very badly on boxing day, so it was the first ski for him in a while.  even my back was a bit stiff after that.  so we headed out to our favourite cafe nearby for a latte date, followed by a long soak at the hot springs.  that felt great.  we are lucky to have such things available to us.

yesterday i decided to head to town for a few errands.  it was only -25 in the morning, and they have been warning of the impending cold snap for days, so i thought it was a good idea to load up on  veggies, milk etc.... we had not driven the car the previous day so it would not start, the key would not even turn.  so around 9 am i loaded the genny on the sled, dragged it out to the driveway and plugged it in to the car.  about a hour should do it i figured.  around 10 i headed out with a hairdryer (kept only for very vague and obscure times like this) and tried to turn it on.  it had been in the shed and was just too cold to start!  back to the house, cursing a bit, as this would delay my departure.  i did think it weird that it wouldn't work!  inside warming my very cold hands, i had a thought..."did i flip the stupid power switch to 'on'"    back to the car, cursing more....I HAD NOT!   so the genny was running and not warming the oil pan.  how dumb!    i did manage to get it started an hour later, and realized it was very low on oil.   i tried my best to top it up with super gooey frozen oil!  hands cold again, and only one more task before leaving.  we have tied a rug to the front of the car because the engine gets too cold at this temperature when you are cruising down the road.  it was frozen and stuck to the bumper.  i had to rip it off and straighten it up and stick it halfway under the hood. done!  great, now the genny back in its insulated box behind the shed....aaahhh!  all these little things really are little when its -10, but much more irritating when its really cold!   i was in a bit of a bad mood for the rest of the day, not improved by one hour in the bank trying to sign one piece of paper..... was it really that important to get to town?    i did come home with the most yummy cherries from chile and together with a glass of red wine, they cheered me up quite a bit.

all for now, until the next cold snap???

lara

November 27th

well things have ground to a halt here at the studio.  -45 will do that sometimes!!  we are going into day three of extreme cold.

its been more than a month since i last wrote, and i am hunkered down in the cabin, big pot of soup on the woodstove, and cup of ginger lemon tea in hand.....i'm sick!   with a wicked sore throat, and hardly any voice left.   i guess our last few weeks of craziness have caught up with me.   the day after our 3 for 3 weekend, it started with a little tingle in my throat, an eye infection, and canker sores, and the night before the big Cranberry Fair, i began to feel really sick, and did not sleep at all.  by 6:30 am we were both up, and realized that the fire had not taken in our cabin (we have been sleeping in the studio).  it was pretty cold, but not freezing inside.  fortunately darren had brought in a small camping stove to make coffee.  our propane was not functioning well....too darn cold.

my stiff  morning latte really helped get me dressed, and dressed some more, and into the poor little tercel for the brutally cold drive to town.  our wonderful landlords let us put the car, along with theirs into the wood-heated shop for the night.  it was pretty cute, two gold tercels squeezed in side by side.  this is really hunkering down kind of weather, and we almost did just that, except that this fair is pretty important to us, and we had put in a lot of time towards it.   we expected a rather quiet day, with little turn out from the public, but no such thing.   we yukoners are a hardy breed....."-40???   but there's a craft fair....who cares, we're going!"  and they all came out in droves.   i tried not to talk too much, but by 11 am opening, i was one hurtin' unit.  everyone offered suggestions and cures and i hit the drugstore afterwards and loaded up.

we were a bit delayed in leaving the sale, as we could not get into the car....all the locks were frozen.  why did we lock the car again?   well at least it was warm inside the hotel lobby as i waited for darren and barbara and shiela and forest to sort things out...thanks you guys, i wasn't much help.   after a lovely hot shower, and bowl of tortilla soup at forest and georgi's house, we headed back to the cabin, which was nice and warm thanks to pete and mary!  i went to bed pretty early, doped up on vitamin I and nyquil, and woke up feeling slightly more normal.  sleep is amazing.

we are planning to take it easy this week and stay home until the cold breaks.  it sure doesn't look like that's going to happen soon, only 5 o'clock now and its -38 already...that usually means -45 by morning.  i did get out for a short walk today, and enjoyed the beautiful sun.  always bright and sunny when its very cold.  we admired our wood pile, and think we have enough to last a couple months anyway, but that, of course will depend on how cold this winter is.    the weather guys are predicting above 0 by the weekend.  who knows?

all for now, i have to go blow my nose...sniffle, sniffle....

November 24th

I made some very small oak and maple frames for Lara's "mini" landscapes and abstractions - the work is only 1" x 1 3/4" and the frames about 2 1/2"  by 3 1/2" - we end up gluing the piece on top of the glass and have the mat behind the glass.  The name and signature/date is on the mat and protected by the glass.  We saw some other art work mounted this way and it's a nice option.  It lets the works' dimensional aspect be seen yet is a "complete" little art piece with mat & frame.  Practically it would be hard to mount such small work behind the glass.  It would need a relatively deep frame for it's lateral dimension and the effect would be to darken the inside "shadow box", making the art harder to see.

We are in the -30C type of weather now!  The northern lights last night were fantastic - I came back from the shop w/o the need for a headlamp because of the lights above.  It's sunny now, around 10:30 and it'll probably be like that till around 2:30 when the sun starts to get close to the mountains again.  Better go and make use of this nice light (photos...).

November 14th.

I updated a big change-over we did between Yukon Art Society, Yukon Artist's @ Work and Lara's Studio - moving around art work and adding some new work.  The new work is not on the site yet -- will be doing that in the next few days.  I am busy sanding my blocks for the the sliding block puzzles.  I am glad to have my cutting boards and magnet stamps already made.  The sale for those is on Sunday - the Lingonberry.  The day before is Spruce Bog and before that Yukon Artist's @ Work christmas sale.
Lara is working on some last minute things leading up to the these sales - she completed a series of works last month that we framed into little wooden shadow boxes that I made last year.  There are about 14 pieces and we were going to have them ready for the Cranberry sale but have decided to keep them together for awhile.  Perhaps we will try and keep them for a show someplace before.

October 13th.

well i guess its my lucky day....i am being coerced into sitting here to write.   morning latte is long over, and i have been checking over the ever-expanding name's list as darren will be printing out a new one for me, and i am anxious to get to my studio.  its the first really cool morning, at -10 degrees celcius.  both the fires are burning bright, and i am sure the last of the lettuce in the garden is truly the last, but i have hopes that the greenhouse greens might be ok.

the last couple of weeks i have been working on bracelet beads and new whirlies.  yesterday was a particularly fun day, as i was experimenting with a slightly different technique to get the whirlies even cooler.  i am pumped about it, and can't wait to make more today.

September 21st.

I need to get Lara to sit down and update the happenings at our studio cabin.  She's been over there quite a bit lately so I wonder what she's working on???

August 16th.

Getting ready to head up to Dawson for the Riverside Arts Festival and hoping that the trip to Dawson will also be a trip back to summer!!!

July 25th.

In the month between these notes a lot has happened.  Longest days came and went and Lara's show opened.   Right now the Poly-Cabin is a cleaned out of polymer clay and framing bits and pieces and is once again a residence for our land-lords  friends.  Lara will be going to the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival in Dawson City during the Discovery Days Weekend (August 18-20) and we'll be able to both be at the Fireweed Markets on Thursdays now the Longest Days Market is finished.

June 20th.

How can 24hrs of daylight still not be enough time....  I have spent the better part of today getting the web-site up to date.  Adding some new work that didn't make the cut for the upcoming show - actually we are short on space at the Chocolate Claim and those pieces would have been nice - but instead we'll have them at Longest Days and/or Fireweed Market.

I just returned from the 5th visit to Haines Junction in about as many weeks!  Fun place to go in the summer.  Lara has done two school projects this spring/summer.  A one day workshop for teachers in Teslin and a 2-day Artist in the School program for the Destruction Bay kids.

April 14th.

ok its about time that i wrote something here....darren has been great with updating this site, but now a few words from the beadress....

woke up this morning to fresh snow, and a very overcast sky...good job i took my new fashion bike for a ride yesterday!!!  and got a few pictures of mountains when we could see them.  i have been spending the last few weeks in the studio working on landscapes, and pondering my piece for the yukon arts centre.   the pondering always goes better after a lovely midday latte.  we have been frequenting our local cafe Bean North, and even had a business meeting there last week.  just darren and i, and lots of ideas!

i worked until almost midnight last night, on some easter treats to hide on monday.  every year we have an egg hunt, and brunch at the cabin.  we'll fire up the brick oven and do a turkey, ham and breads, and the traditional ukrainian egg bonk.  can't wait, hope the snow melts and the sun shines.

March 20th.

The YAAW 2nd Anniversary party was a good reason to get some of the work that Lara's been making in the last few months onto boards or framed and ready to show...  The pieces also needed to be photographed before "release" and our winter made one more valiant effort this week with -30 temperatures.  I almost always take photos outside using the natural light and had to keep running inside the cabin to switch up pieces.  The end result was worth it though since the photos turn out much better with the natural light.

Lara produced some baby-beads for our friend Georgi's new baby, Finn (Phineas) - born a few days ago.  The baby-beads were quite a hit in the maternity ward...

There will be a show of YAAW members at the Yukon Arts Centre this summer and the deadline is approaching - so Lara is working on that in addition to getting ready for Spring Spruce Bog (April 1st) and "stocking up" for summer.

March 1st.

Wow! where did the last 6 weeks go?  Lara has been working at the studio and I have quite a few beads to drill, art pieces to mounts and/or frame and cards to make.  We followed the Yukon Quest this past February like we usually do and that cut into the better part of each day.

The days are getting much longer now.  Light at 8am until 6pm - and getting longer each day.  Still cold though but it seems like the last of winter.

The tester ring I was wearing - didn't work out unfortunately.  The clay strip eventually broke off of the silver base.  It may have had something to do with the Algyval oil I had been using...?

January 11th.

Lara back at the poly-cabin and working on a few scenes...also made a cool tester ring - using a sterling silver ring base.  She used clay to fill the groove that goes around the ring.   She will wear it for the next little while and see how the clay holds up.

January 7th.

Day 3 of the ordering ordeal... flipping though books, beadworks vs. rings & things vs. rio grande .... fun but also a job you just want to be over...

December 29th.

As we approach the new year Lara's studio has been a bit quite - the pasta machines lying unused... but I think Lara is anxious to get back at her clay soon.  January and February are great times to spend in the studio working on projects that were put off during the frantic summer days.  It is often the time that the concept for future shows are formulated and new works are made.  Before then though, we are still on the Christmas break and playing some Mah Jong, Carcassone and playing pond hockey.  Life is good.

December 13th.

We did the last Christmas sale a few days ago.  It's one that Lara has organized now for the last 7 years!  Wow, time goes by fast.   It's a bit of a culmination in terms of the seasonal sales and a time to celebrate a bit.  Now we are relaxing a bit more and  probably expect a couple of studio tours before Christmas.  We'll have time to do our Christmas cards and get them sent out.  The few months are pretty slow in terms of sales but it is a great time to think about new projects, shows and techniques to try out.  Towards spring Lara usually organizes some polymer clay workshops.  Perhaps DH will be able to get the jewellery side of this site filled out by spring time too?

November 29th.

The melt extended out 10-days in the end - now we are back to regular winter weather.  Today DH is loading the new work onto the web site gallery.  Cranberry Fair was last Sunday.

November 21st.

We are on day 6 of the BIG MELT.  With perfect snow conditions at the start of November we started getting psyched for good skiing - and we did get a bit in before the warm weather came to stay.  Today it's +6C!!  Lara has been busy working on some pieces for the Cranberry Fair - were we'll have flatwork.  There are some very nice pieces that will be show-cased for the first time at that event.  DH has been mounting those pieces, photographing them and dealing with the web-site to have the pieces on-line at the time of the show.  Also we have both been working on making some jewellery

Lara finished a zipper pull collection commision from a group in Ontario.  The collection was called the "fresh air collection" and included 20 pulls with little mountain scenes and faint outlines of a factory.  The group was responsible for writing legislation pertaining to emissions from factories in Ontario.

October 21st.

We returned to the Yukon and -9C weather on the 15th of October.  It is now snowing outside and it feels like winter is on it's way.  On October 6th we were swimming in the Ottawa river up at the farm near Pembroke!  We spent a few weeks at the farm with a short visit to Kingston and the final week touring around Quebec and checking out the fall colours.

Lara is back at the the Poly-Cabin (another cabin near ours that we rent over the winter months).  We are getting ready for the upcoming Christmas sale season.  Lara making beads and I am updating this site, printing tags, cutting card stock and misc. other things.

September 14th

We are "Outside" as Yukoners tend to refer to trips beyond our territory!  We are happily experiencing a return to summer.  We have 5 days on Lasqeuti Island at our friends camp on "the notch" and returned recently back to Vancouver to do some window-shopping, disc golf and catch a few shows at the Vancouver fringe.  Lara is a bit of beading on the Lasqeuti but I think she is desperate for some serious quiet time with her travelling "bead void".

September 4th:

The day after Adam has headed home and we are re-arranging a bit and catching up on a few last minute things before our own little trip down to Vancouver and Ontario.

August 28th:

We are several days into a visit from Lara's nephew Adam, just finished his 1st year at the University of Waterloo.  We've been playing disc golf pretty hard, even set up a course at the cabin here.  Have done a few hikes too.  Yesterday was wet and a bit miserable but we found a great local trail up to alpine and will return when the sun comes back.  Today we are seeking out some grayling fishing spots...Adam's Visit Photos

August 15th:

Back from Dawson today.  Was a great weekend.  Sunday the smoke cleared and made everyone appreciate the clear blue skies.  DH managed to squeeze in a nice bike ride on Sunday too.  We swam at Twin Lakes on the way home and also had a bite to eat while there - getting home around 8pm.

Lots to do in the next week.  Lara's at YAAW for two days.  Thursday is the Market and AITP opening at 7pm.  In a week Adam, Lara's nephew arrives and DH has quite a few shelves/counters to build by then...  We'd like to move in before then.  Oh yeah, we've also got the combined Harvest Fair - Storytelling festival to attend on Sat-Sun.

August 12th:

We are in Dawson City, Yukon for the 5th Annual Yukon Riverside Arts Festival.  Lara is demonstrating working in polymer clay while DH is doing a bit of computer work (this site), a bit of biking and a bit of relaxing....  It is very smoky right now in town and apparently it's blowing in from Alaska.  Otherwise the weather is great.  I will try to post some photos from the Arts Festival if technology permits.

Back at the homestead we are still working on the renos... between berry picking and bike riding.

July 27th:

Went to the Chocolate Claim today and took down the show.  Luckily BMO still would like some work and we decided to remove the work that had been there and replace it with 7 pieces from the show.  Two other pieces from the show went out to YAAW and DH learned how to enter the inventory on their new GallerySoft program.  Since the studio here at home is not quite ready to move back into, it is great to have a venue for those works.

July 26th:

Well, back from Dawson City Music Festival - where we had some nice local salmon (thanks Jeff), warm weather and good tunes to listen to while we were set up.  We took our friend's camper (thanks Forest and Georgi) and stopped at Minto on the way up and the McQuesten airstrip on the way back.  All quite civilized.

Minto landing

McQuesten airstrip

July 19th:

Gearing up for the Dawson City Music Festival AND doing a few days downtown at the Longest Days Marketplace.  We have the generator going - that means IT IS late since we are in the "land of the midnight sun".

The cabin shelves, the ones for the books above the windows are done and are down at Pete and Mary's shop, just need a few hours to do some varnishing... then install.  Hopefully before Dawson...

July 14th:

The middle of summer and we are finally getting some hot, clear-sky days.  Lucky that it is this week since Lara is working outside at LePage park doing a few landscape pieces for the Arts in the Park program.  We are returning to the Farmers market today after missing two weeks due to ONE's opening and the Street Festival.  The Street Festival is ongoing but we are setting up just 2-3 times a week on main street.  We were also at the Fireweed Community Market tonight.

The new floor is in the cabin/studio now and one corner is trimmed out and Lara's bead table is set back up - it was just too painful to have the beads boxed up for so long.   DH is now in the midst of cabinet building.  Did a bike race yesterday hosted by velonorth (results)

July 4th:

It's been hectic of late.  We have been at the Chocolate Claim for our morning cappuccinos twice and to take in the show!  That's been relaxing - but then it's off to the Longest Days Marketplace - Lara's been demonstrating (polymer clay, not unfair banking practices) and I've been behind a display of jewellery and polymer art.   Nice to be downtown though, where the cafes are close and there are lots of folks walking by.  Cabin renos are still crawling along - our long awaited tiles are in and now delayed due to the installer being too busy (me).  Maybe tommorrow?

June 26th:

We got the invites done a few days ago.  The framing is also now completed.  Took some time and lots of tables to lay everything out.  Luckily we were able to use our neighbours place while they were away.  Lara is working on the text for the show, opening statement, some comments about the work and the like.  I am updating the web site with the digital photos we took during the framing (pictures taken without the glass on the pieces).  Lara is also working with some "things" in clay - something will be around for opening night...

June 8th:

We were at the framers the other day and ordered all the frames and matboards for the rest of the work that'll be in the show.  Now the pieces are laid out and DH will put them all together when the frames come in (about a week).  Lara was working to "clean up" here studio table, which can usually lead to making several flatwork, sticky beads, zipper pulls and what-not.  We are to vacate the "poly-cabin" by monday and will probably store the clay area for awhile.  Cabin renovations are still ongoing and we are kind of waiting for tiles for the floor before we can re-install trim.  DH is working on the shelves for now.

June 3rd:

Lara has been working on some pieces for the upcoming show.  She liked the pieces that were framed when she was away and we will continue to use the shadow-box style of framing for some of the work she's doing now.  During a moment of clarity, our neighbour Leyla and Lara came up with the name for the new show and some of the pieces.  The show is going to be called "one word says it all" and all of the work will have single word names.  Of the four pieces already framed, three have names; blue, release and eden.

May 26th:

Lara returns to the Yukon!!

May 19th:

Points of View show opens at Yukon Art Society gallery.

May 16th:

Starting this week - the Studio is under renovation! New floor, fresh paint on ceiling, trim, windows.  New shelving as time permits.

May 12th:

First Fireweed Community Market at the Shipyards Park in downtown Whitehorse.  Turnout was good and there is a nice selection of vendors with more vegetables coming later as they grow...

May 11th:

Framed those two "big" works and they look stunning - for now are un-named, going by the blue piece and the black & white piece.

May 10th:

The school piece was framed and delivered today!  It was an epic framing job and turned out to be quite heavy and cumbersome to work with (DH).  There are two pieces to frame for the upcoming show and they look quite nice - big, but not as unmanageable as the school piece.

May 5th:

A new showing of work was set up at the Bank of Montreal (BMO) in downtown Whitehorse.  The works include another day in paradise - a framed landscape that was the 2005 submission to the NorthWestTel phone book competition and delight  - a framed millefiori quilt-work piece.  Also on display are a number of recent works completed this spring.

May 4th:

The pieces are done for the school and we are now waiting on the frame parts and then DH can put it all together.  We are trying to get it done for the 12th of May.   The piece will consist of 20 -  6" x 9" boards.  Here is a link to a legend that will accompany the piece - click on individual boards for a bigger view.

May 3rd:

Lara is in Ontario from May 3rd - 26th, but brought a little bit of her Studio along with her.  About 40lbs of beads, polymer clay and tools - "just in case..."   Have bead will travel.  (DH)

April 2005

I am thinking about work for an upcoming show in July at the Chocolate Claim, a local café. I am hoping to try some bigger pieces, but I am limited by the size of the oven. I will try to create a number of smaller pieces and then join them together somehow….still in progress….

I am working on some pieces for galleries that place orders in the springtime, and I have agreed to do an art project with one of the schools in town to make a large mural-like piece. I will work with each class, from kindergarten to grade 12. In the end I hope to have 20 large squares that everyone will have participated in and it will be like a patchwork quilt. (lara)
